Peggy P. McNaull, MD, has been named UNC Health’s next System Chief Medical and Quality Officer.

Peggy P. McNaull, MD, has been named UNC Health’s next System Chief Medical and Quality Officer. She is currently the Frederic A. Berry Professor and Chair of the University of Virginia Department of Anesthesiology and Professor of Pediatrics. She will take over this role from Tony Lindsey, UNC Health’s current System Chief Medical and Quality Officer, who has announced his plans to retire on Oct. 4.
As UNC Health Chief Medical and Quality Officer (CMO), Dr. McNaull will work closely with the CMOs at each entity, chair the system Quality Improvement Oversight Committee that governs UNC Health’s quality and safety programs, and lead our Hospital Quality and Innovation, Care Redesign, Physician Advisor, and Central Credentialing teams.
Dr. McNaull has a long history with UNC that reaches back to her residency and more recently includes several significant leadership positions at UNC Hospitals and the UNC School of Medicine.
From 2009 to 2018, Dr. McNaull served as the UNC Department of Anesthesiology’s Division Chief for Pediatric Anesthesiology. During that time, she was also named as the department’s first Vice Chair for Patient Safety and Quality Improvement. In 2018, She was appointed the Associate Chief Medical Officer for Quality and Safety for UNC Hospitals where she was also integral in scaling some of the flagship programs across the state through UNC Health’s system-wide care redesign effort.
Dr. McNaull began her career in healthcare as nurse, practicing as an RN in neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. She continued to serve as an RN while earning her MD from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans. She came to UNC for her residency, where she was chief resident before completing a Pediatric Anesthesiology fellowship at UNC and a Pediatric Cardiovascular Anesthesiology fellowship program at Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston.
Dr. McNaull is a national leader in pediatric anesthesiology. She is a member of the Board of Directors for the Society for Pediatric Anesthesiology and currently serves as the society’s President-elect. She recently co-chaired a task force charged with re-envisioning the future of the Pediatric Anesthesiology ACGME program. Dr. McNaull is very involved in the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), where she serves as an Applied Examiner. She has participated in written exam development since 2009 as a question writer and editor. Dr. McNaull was recently selected by the board of directors to serve as the Vice Chair of the Advanced Exam Committee.
