Newsweek’s list for 2025 includes UNC Health Rex, UNC Medical Center and UNC Health Johnston

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Three UNC Health hospitals have been named to Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals 2025” list:

  • UNC Health Rex (Raleigh)
  • UNC Medical Center (Chapel Hill)
  • UNC Health Johnston (Smithfield)

Newsweek’s prestigious ranking lists more than 2,400 hospitals in 30 countries, including 13 in North Carolina. The full list was announced Tuesday morning and can be viewed here: www.newsweek.com/rankings/worlds-best-hospitals-2025.

“UNC Health is proud to have three of our hospitals recognized for the outstanding care they provide,” said Jeff Lindsay, President of UNC Health Hospitals and Chief Operating Officer. “We’re able to achieve this level of excellence thanks to the hard work of our teammates and physicians, and their extraordinary dedication to our patients.”

Newsweek noted that having reliable and accessible data is essential when selecting a hospital for treatment. The list is designed to be “a trusted resource for patients, families and health care leaders seeking insights into the world’s top medical institutions.”

Newsweek and Statista awarded the best hospitals based on four data sources:

  • Recommendations from Medical Experts: Online survey among tens of thousands of doctors, health care professionals, and hospital managers in 30 countries
  • Results from Patient Surveys: Survey of patient satisfaction with hospitalization
  • Hospital Quality Metrics: Medical indicators e.g., data on quality of care for treatments, hygiene measures, patient safety, and waiting times.
  • Statista PROMs Implementation Survey: Optional online survey on the implementation and use of PROMs in hospitals.

Based on the above four pillars and their respective weights, a final score was calculated for each hospital.
