The UNC School of Medicine and BioSTAR are excited to announce PRISM—the Postbaccalaureate Research Initiative in Science and Medicine. This training program is designed for recent graduates with bachelor’s degrees who are pursuing careers in biomedical sciences or medicine. The program is led by Kaitlin Blackmore, M.A., the PRISM Program Coordinator, and Jonathan Schisler, M.S., Ph.D., the PRISM Faculty Director. PRISM aligns with the School of Medicine’s Strategic Plan (https://www.med.unc.edu/strategicplan/) under the Research Pillar, and it prepares students for admission to top PhD programs or medical schools.
The UNC School of Medicine, in collaboration with BioSTAR, is pleased to announce PRISM—the Postbaccalaureate Research Initiative in Science and Medicine. This training program is intended for recent graduates with bachelor’s degrees who are interested in pursuing careers in biomedical sciences or medicine. The program is led by Kaitlin Blackmore, M.A., the PRISM Program Coordinator, and Jonathan Schisler, M.S., Ph.D., the PRISM Faculty Director. PRISM offers a research experience lasting 1 to 2 years. During this time, participants gain hands-on experience in a designated lab, take one graduate-level course each year, and engage in customized professional development activities. Funding is provided by the host lab or principal investigator, which includes a stipend of $34,000 for the first year and an optional $35,000 for the second year. Benefits include health insurance (Student Blue), access to campus health services, and career workshops focused on graduate and medical school applications and interview preparation.
Eligible applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. university in biomedical or behavioral sciences within the past two years. Candidates should be committed to working full-time in a UNC lab for at least one year.
Three cohorts begin each year: Spring (January), Summer (June), and Fall (August). The application deadlines for 2025 are May 1 for the Summer cohort and July 1 for the Fall cohort.
