UNC Health remains committed to continuing negotiations.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Dec. 1, 2025 – UNC Health has been unable to reach a new, fair agreement with Cigna.
As a result, starting today (Dec. 1, 2025), UNC Health hospitals, clinics and providers are “out of network” for Cigna members. That could mean higher costs for Cigna members who visit UNC Health providers, clinics and hospitals.
We urge patients to consider other insurance options if possible, and to contact Cigna by calling the number on the back of their member ID card.
Certain patients — such as those who are hospitalized, pregnant, or undergoing an active course of treatment before Dec. 1 — may qualify for “Continuity of Care” through Cigna for a limited time. Patients must contact Cigna directly to determine eligibility and submit the required Continuity of Care forms.
UNC Health remains committed to continuing negotiations. We are hopeful Cigna will work with us to reach an agreement that puts patients first. Our goal remains a new agreement that’s consistent with our relationships with other insurance plans and supports the high-quality care that patients deserve.
We recognize that this situation is concerning and overwhelming for our patients. We will work closely with them to minimize any disruption in care.
UNC Health will continue to provide updates as they develop. For more information about insurance coverage accepted by UNC Health, visit unchealth.org/records-insurance/insurance.
