Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Rex Mobile Mammography, a department of UNC Health Rex Hospital, will welcome a new mobile mammography unit this month named Hope Esperanza, affectionately known as “Hope.” The name reflects the department’s continued commitment to serving the community by expanding access to 3D mammography and supporting early detection of breast cancer. The new addition further advances the program’s mission to deliver screenings to women within a 55-mile radius of Raleigh, serving 21 counties—many of which experience limited access to healthcare services.
“By delivering 3D breast imaging on wheels, these mobile units have removed barriers to care and brought lifesaving screenings directly into the communities we serve, making early detection more accessible for thousands of women,” said Romona Wells, RT, Radiology Supervisor, Rex Mobile Mammography.
“They provide critical access to care for underserved populations while also offering convenience for women in corporate organizations, allowing them to receive breast cancer screenings without missing work. The impact of this service is profound—advancing equity, prevention, and hope through accessible healthcare.”
As Rex Mobile Mammography marks 25 years of service, the name Hope Esperanza reflects not only the program’s mission, but the experiences of the staff who serve women across the region.
“When I hear the name Hope Esperanza, I reflect on the past 10 years I’ve spent with this department,” said Lindsey Morse, Mobile Customer Service Representative/Driver.
“I think of all the women I’ve had the privilege of meeting, and the many stories they have shared. So many have told me they would not have received a mammogram if we hadn’t brought services directly to their doctor’s office or workplace. I’ve listened as they’ve shared experiences of loved ones facing diagnoses, and the battles their families have endured. With this new mobile unit, it is my hope to continue meeting women where they are, expand our reach, and help this program grow to new heights—so we can serve even more women in our community.”
As of March 2026, Rex Mobile Mammography has screened more than 83,000 women, with nearly half receiving services at no cost through the Rex Mammography Assistance Program. Operating four to five days per week, the program partners with community organizations and local businesses to provide convenient, high‑quality breast care focused on early detection and equitable access for all women.
