Global Perspective, Local Touch
More than a decade ago, Minh Nguyen came to the United States as a high school exchange student. He has since followed a path to the UNC School of Nursing, a nursing position in the Burn Intensive Care Unit at UNC Medical Center’s renowned North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, and the UNC School of Medicine, where today he is training to become a physician.

John Stackhouse, founder of the NC Jaycee Burn Center, passed away
Stackhouse pledged $40,000 to help establish the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center at UNC Hospitals. In addition, he provided a gift to establish the John Stackhouse Distinguished Professorship and lecture series in 1994 and to provide continued support for the Burn Center.

Bruce Cairns, Professor of Surgery, has worn many hats: Navy doctor, disaster planner and responder, burn surgeon, director of the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center, School of Medicine representative in UNC faculty governance, to name a few. This year he’s running for UNC Faculty Chair.

Returning the Favor
Bruce Cairns credits his military experience with shaping his perspective and making him a better doctor. Today, as a way of giving back, he’s assisting Special Forces medics with educational and career-development opportunities through the Advanced Medic Instructor Training program – a program that paved the way for the UNC School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant program.

American Nurses Association Elects Ernest Grant as Next President
