A team of researchers from the UNC School of Medicine Department of Family Medicine and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center have received new funding to develop and test messaging to co-users of alcohol and tobacco products on the risk of associated cancers.

Angela Smith, MD, MS, vice-chair of academic affairs at UNC School of Medicine’s urology department, receives the 2020 Phillip and Ruth Hettleman Prize. Dr. Smith will be awarded $5,000 and will publicly present her research during the Hettleman Lectures, the kick-off event for University Research Week.

UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Carolina Cancer Screening Initiative and the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Network are partnering with the NC DHHS Cancer Prevention and Control Branch to increase colorectal cancer screening through evidence-based interventions and other strategies in partnership with NC Federally Qualified Health Centers and the American Cancer Society. At Lineberger, this effort is led by Dan Reuland, MD, MPH.
