By the middle of March, 2020, COVID-19 had upended the traditional training experience in the UNC Internal Medicine Residency Program. Didactic coursework and clinical skills training had to be quickly converted to an online format and clinical rotations were suspended as decisions were quickly made to ensure residents had meaningful and robust curricular activities during the clinical suspensions. It was against this backdrop that a new COVID-19 elective was formalized.

The 2020 Whitehead Lecture is set for Friday, September 4 beginning at noon. The School of Medicine’s executive dean, Dr. Cristy Page, is slated to kick off the event, and Dr. Koyal Jain to deliver the lecture. The event this year will take place virtually.

Hospitalized patients with diabetes are dependent on hospital staff to monitor blood glucose, administer medications and deliver meals in a coordinated manner. Inconsistency in the timing of these tasks can increase the risk for hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. The UNC Department of Medicine’s Value Care Action Group (VCAG) has been working with the division of endocrinology and metabolism to improve glycemic control for hospitalized patients. New services recently introduced are ensuring the safety of patient care and decreasing the length of stay at UNC Medical Center.

On Monday, March 16th, Clare Harrop, PhD, found out that her daughters' daycare was closing. As the full impact of state and national shutdowns hit her, Harrop began to lose sleep and feel a heightened sense of anxiety. At the same time, she was thinking of the many families she works with in her research studies. She recalls texting a colleague: If I'm feeling like this, how are parents of kids with autism feeling?

The Academic Coaches will work with students in the Carolina EXCEL program providing small group facilitation and academic coaching in the foundational sciences for a group of 5 students enrolled in the Carolina EXCEL program which would begin in the Summer of 2021. EXCEL is a newly launching year-long pipeline program for under-represented in medicine students to prepare them to excel in medical school.
