A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine led by UNC School of Medicine’s Seth A. Berkowitz, MD, MPH, shows that participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by older adults dually enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid is associated with fewer hospital visits and lower healthcare costs. But millions of Americans do not take advantage of the program.

Jessica Lin, MD, assistant professor of infectious diseases at the UNC School of Medicine, is the senior author of a study that shows how frequently COVID-19 spreads to other people living in the same household as someone diagnosed with the illness. The study also shows that household density is a major factor in infection risk, disproportionately affecting communities of color.
