Fields has produced more than 100 brackets for the hospital as well as for fire and rescue teams in Havelock, North Carolina. Fields is using an open-source design and is customizing the brackets to fit masks that health care providers use. He said it can take anywhere from 70 to 90 minutes to print about half a dozen brackets, depending on their size.

Nontraditional student Jay Chen, a senior in the Division of Clinical Laboratory Science, spent four years as a medic in the U.S. Army—a time he credits with building a sense of discipline and rigor. Chen has found these attributes to be useful in studying clinical laboratory science.

Jason Hrdina, a clinical assistant professor and director of clinical education in the Department of Allied Health Sciences’ Physician Assistant Studies program, will lead a new advance practice provider (APP) residency program, a joint initiative between the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals. Hrdina will serve as program director.

The Society of Emergency Medicine Physician Assistants (SEMPA) has named Janelle Bludorn, a clinical assistant professor in the Physician Assistant Studies program, as its vice president for 2020-2021. The PA program is housed in the Department of Allied Health Sciences.

The Department of Allied Health Sciences (DAHS) has named John Grose as its associate chair for research and scholarship, which leads research across seven disciplines and several units in the health care spectrum. Grose, a professor in both the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (OHNS) and in the DAHS Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences, began this role January 1, 2020.
