In a joint effort to modernize our clinical data research infrastructure, UNC School of Medicine, NC TraCS Institute, and UNC Health have built the new Secure Health Informatics Research Environment (SHIRE). The SHIRE, going live on November 3, is a full-featured analytics platform designed to meet the needs of a wide variety of projects using data from UNC Health’s electronic health record.

Focusing on a Southeast 5-county region: Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, New Hanover, and Pender counties, the three student members completed site visits, engaging local practitioners, and completed school visits to recruit providers and broaden access to occupational therapy services.

UNC-Chapel Hill Division of Speech and Hearing Sciences Dr. Stephanie Sjoblad was recently awarded the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Academy of Audiology. After a thorough systematic analysis, Micheal Sandbank, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine and other researchers across the United States found that evidence was lacking that higher intensity interventions provided increased benefits for young autistic children.

A new meta-analysis led by Micheal Sandbank, PhD, an assistant professor in the Department of Health Sciences at the UNC School of Medicine, found that the field of autism needs more high-quality randomized studies of early interventions to help clinicians understand how to better support children diagnosed with the condition.

The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks an accomplished and energetic leader to serve as chair and associate dean for the Department of Health Sciences. The selected individual will lead a diverse group of faculty, trainees and staff members and will oversee all aspects of the department, including clinical practice, education, research and fiscal management consistent with the strategic planning of the UNC School of Medicine, UNC Hospitals and UNC Health.

Springer recently released "Chronic Illness Care, Principles and Practice," edited by UNC Family Medicine's Timothy P. Daaleman, DO, MPH, and Margaret R. Helton, MD. Faculty members in the Department of Family Medicine, faculty across the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, and other national and international experts wrote the textbook.

Doctoral student Orla Putnam's research will examine prosody, which is the rhythm, tone and pattern used during spoken language in males and females with and without autism, and will compare prosody to assessments of social function and interest. Results will inform caregivers, educators and clinicians when considering a possible autism diagnosis for girls.

The UNC Department of Psychiatry seeks female teens with depression, suicidal thoughts, or thoughts of self harm for a study seeking to understand the influence of the menstrual cycle and associated hormones on female teens' stress responses and mood systems.

UNC School of Medicine’s 55th annual Student Research Day will take place on Friday, Nov. 11. The John B. Graham Research Society is seeking faculty judges to help make the day a success by providing formative feedback to student presenters.
