Remembering Dr. Newton Fischer
Dr. Newton Duchan Fischer passed peacefully in his home on Saturday September 15, 2018. Fischer established UNC's Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery in 1952 and served as chair of the department for more than 30 years.

Code Sepsis team recognizes ‘Sepsis Stars’
The Code Sepsis team is very grateful to the following 'Sepsis Stars' that strive to improve patient care through their participation in the sepsis initiative. The sepsis initiative is working to improve timely recognition of potential sepsis and implement the entire care bundle including a lactic acid, blood cultures, IV antibiotics, and IV fluids. This week, the Code Sepsis Team is happy to recognize Tara McCoy, Liz Tallum, Ben Stille for excellent triage and teamwork when they applied appropriate sepsis treatment for an ED septic shock patient.

Qian receives Transformational Project Award from American Heart Association
Li Qian, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, member of UNC McAllister Heart Institute, has received the inaugural Transformational Project Award from the American Heart Association. This award aims to “support highly innovative, high-impact projects that build on work in progress that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate the field of cardiovascular and stroke research.”

Megan Agajanian, in the lab of Ben Major, PhD, and Juanita Limas, in the lab of Jean Cook, PhD, will receive up to $150,000 each to support their biomedical research at the UNC School of Medicine and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
