This research, led by UNC School of Medicine scientists Laura Kincer, Sarah Joseph, PhD, and Ron Swanstrom, PhD, with international collaborators, shows that in addition to HIV’s ability to lay dormant in the blood/lymphoid system, the virus may also lay dormant in the central nervous system, delineating another challenge in creating a cure.

Understanding the determinants for entry into cells could lead to the design of better therapeutics that must enter through this gatekeeping mechanism.

UNC researchers optimized the function of a microscope for cryogenic electron microscopy (CryoEM) to maximize the throughput and performance of the microscope housed in the UNC Chapel Hill Cryo-EM Core Facility. This method development is demonstrated successful for structural studies of GPCRs, a large group of signaling proteins that includes many therapeutic targets with unknown structures.
