A multicenter, randomized, phase 3b trial, done in collaboration with a UNC School of Medicine researcher, found that once-daily oral semaglutide taken at higher doses of 25mg and 50mg improved regulation of blood sugar levels and weight loss compared to the standard 14 mg dose.

The study, which was conducted at UNC-Chapel Hill between 2016 and 2022, concluded that metformin use did not reduce risks for adverse neonatal outcomes in pregnancies with type 2 diabetes. The study findings were reported at the annual meeting of the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine in February.

The study will focus on two factors: provider and diabetes care and education specialist engagement with patients, and patient peer support.
