New Alzheimer’s Disease Research Forum to Launch in January
All trainees (fellows, postdocs, junior faculty, residents, research associates, etc.) interested in Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) are invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the ADRD IDEAS Forum to be held monthly by the Duke-UNC Alzheimer's Disease Research Center. The forum will be directed towards early-career investigators from Duke, UNC-CH, ECU, NCCU, and UNC-Pembroke.

FDA Approves New Drug to Treat Generalized Myasthenia Gravis
James F. Howard Jr., MD, professor in the UNC Department of Neurology, was principal investigator of the phase 3 trial for the experimental drug efgartigimod, developed by Belgian pharmaceutical company Argenx.

Reminder: Eshelman Institute Grant Funding Available
The Eshelman Institute for Innovation recently opened its pre-proposal application for the 2022 annual grant cycle. The Institute seeks to fund translational research related to therapeutics focused on oncology, infectious disease, and neuroscience, including rare diseases, and all digital health technologies. The Institute also welcomes ideas for devices and diagnostics, and other therapeutic areas and services.

DOD Funds $4.3-million Initiative to Improve Sleep, Clearance of the Brain
A multidisciplinary team of researchers will use new technology and imaging strategies to improve impaired waste clearance of the brain due to sleep disruption. The collaborative project is being co-led by Dawn Kernagis, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine, and colleagues from the University of Washington, Oregon Health Science University, BEL Company, and Montana State University.

Baby First at UNC to Receive Gene Therapy for SMA, Thanks to Early Check Newborn Screening
A Charlotte baby became the first at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, N.C. to receive a breakthrough gene therapy treatment for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), after his condition was discovered through the Early Check newborn screening pilot study.
