UNC Lineberger researchers Charles M. Perou, PhD, and Lisa A. Carey, MD, were part of a preclinical study led out of the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute that found that blocking the production of asparagine with a drug called L-asparaginase in mice with aggressive triple negative breast tumors, and putting them on a low-asparagine diet, reduced the breast tumor’s ability to spread.

The Fully Integrated Readiness Service Training (FIRST) Program has announced its third class of students. Shelton Earp, MD, has been named director of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Earp has served as interim director since June 2017, a role he accepted after Norman E. “Ned” Sharpless, MD, UNC Lineberger’s director since January 2014, was nominated to become the director of the National Cancer Institute.
