The UNC School of Medicine lab of Mehmet Kesimer, PhD, has further illuminated the molecular intricacies of mucus and its role in pulmonary diseases, laying more groundwork for better therapies for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other airway conditions. The findings are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Silvio Antoniak, PhD, assistant professor in the UNC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and member of the UNC Blood Research Center and the UNC McAllister Heart Institute, was awarded a four-year, $2.2 million grant from the NIH-NHLBI to investigate the potential therapeutic approach in inhibiting PAR1 to treat chemotherapy-induced heart failure.

UNC’s William A. Fischer II, MD, and David A. Wohl, MD, are part of an international group of authors that contributed to a Perspective piece published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The piece argues that patients with Ebola virus disease in countries with limited resources should be treated according to the same standard of care used in countries where resources are more readily available.
