Gabrielle Adams, a UNC undergraduate Pre-Med student, authored a new study in a special issue on Cancer for the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, entitled “Attitudes and Behaviors That Impact Skin Cancer Risk among Men.” Adam Goldstein, MD, MPH, Professor of Family Medicine and Director of Departmental Advancement, and Kristen Jarman, MSPH, Associate Director of the Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program, co-authored the study.

UNC School of Medicine and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy leaders in professional development created a resource to help the National Institutes of Health evaluate T32 graduate and postdoctoral training programs at universities across the country. UNC School of Medicine’s Rebekah Layton, PhD, and Rob Nicholas, PhD, were co-leaders of this effort.

The application cycle is open for the NC TraCS Postdoctoral Training Program. The goal of this program is to immerse postdoctoral scientists in the actual translation of research products within one of three tracks in the translational pipeline – clinical trials/regulatory; entrepreneurship and commercialization; and health systems. Applications due November 15, 2021.

This Emory-led study shows a link between post-trauma brain activity and symptoms of anxiety and PTSD six months later. It is part of the AURORA study, led nationally by Sam McLean, MD, at the UNC School of Medicine.

A multidisciplinary team of researchers will use new technology and imaging strategies to improve impaired waste clearance of the brain due to sleep disruption. The collaborative project is being co-led by Dawn Kernagis, PhD, at the UNC School of Medicine, and colleagues from the University of Washington, Oregon Health Science University, BEL Company, and Montana State University.

Led by Ben Philpot, PhD, and Matt Judson, PhD, the new therapy was generally well-tolerated and prevented key signs of the condition in animal models.

UNC School of Medicine and Princeton researchers, co-led by Frank Conlon, PhD, and Wei Shi, PhD, conducted a first-of-its-kind analysis to discover differences in how particular proteins in heart cells are expressed in genetically diverse male and female mice during the earliest embryonic stage, well before sex hormones influence cells.

UNC is part of a national effort, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Diversity Program Consortium, to identify best mentoring practices for scientists underrepresented in biomedical research.

A study published in Annals of Internal Medicine led by UNC School of Medicine’s Seth A. Berkowitz, MD, MPH, shows that participation in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by older adults dually enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid is associated with fewer hospital visits and lower healthcare costs. But millions of Americans do not take advantage of the program.

This new method, created by the UNC School of Medicine labs of Klaus Hahn and Tim Elston, has the potential to super-charge the study of human proteins as they interact and change their conformations in fundamentally important ways in human health and disease.
