UNC Partners with SECU Foundation to Increase Behavioral Health Care Access to Children through Telepsychiatry
A $1.97 million grant from the SECU Foundation will allow the UNC School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry to lead a pilot program that will address the behavioral health crisis in children and adolescents by expanding access to care through telemedicine services in schools, especially in rural areas.

Leah Ranney, PhD, Director for Tobacco Prevention and Evaluation Program (TPEP) and team received a three-year NIH award in the amount of $1.2 million for the research study Strengthening Cigar Warnings to Prevent Adolescent Use.

Carolina Research Leads to Effective Experimental Pill to Treat COVID-19
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill research set the stage to seek emergency authorization of the first oral antiviral drug to treat COVID-19, a pill developed by the pharmaceutical companies Merck and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics. William Fischer, MD, at the UNC School of Medicine led pivotal clinical trials on the drug molnupiravir.

Mini-Symposium: Pharmacogenomics and Decision Support in the EHR
The Program for Precision Medicine in Health Care will host an interactive mini-symposium exploring mechanisms for predicting how a patient's genome will influence their response to medications, implementing pharmacogenomics in the clinic, and development of EHR support.

Plasmodium Falciparum Evolving to Escape Malaria Rapid Diagnostics in Africa
UNC School of Medicine, the World Health Organization, and the Ethiopian Public Health Institute conducted a joint study to find that malaria parasites are spreading undetected across the Horn of Africa, posing a major health threat to the region. Lead UNC lead investigator Jonathan Parr, MD, MPH, is senior author of this Nature Microbiology paper.

UNC School of Medicine Research Funding Increases Nearly $50 million in FY21
Funding for UNC School of Medicine research reached an all-time high of $584 million during fiscal year 2021. Researchers were awarded $357 million from the National Institutes of Health.
