UNC-Chapel Hill was recently named a National HIV Residency Pathway Consortium Site and awarded a year-long, $68,000 grant to support its efforts in training family medicine and internal medicine residents in caring for people with HIV. UNC’s site Investigators, Rick Moore, MD, and Louise Rambo King, MD, have a storied history of caring for patients with HIV.

Research led by first and second authors Aaron C. Viser, Adelaide R. Cooke, and corresponding author Anne F. Peery, MD, associate professor of medicine at the UNC School of Medicine, reveals how a screening tool can measure the prevalence of malnutrition among patients at the UNC Multidisciplinary Inflammatory Bowel Disease Clinic.

Nailah Adams, MD, recently served as the head team physician for USA Track & Field for their 2023 Pan American Games contingent in Santiago, Chile. Adams previously was the official team physician for Trinidad and Tobago at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and is the director of the UNC Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship.

A UNC Family Medicine collaboration with Piedmont Health Services and partners has resulted in a $3 million HRSA grant to improve training in overcoming language and disability barriers. The 5-year project, “Primary Care Training and Enhancement - Language and Disability Access to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill,” is focused on building and developing curriculum and program experiences to enhance the training for medical students and residents.

In addition to its growing funding and support of more than 160 new medical and dental residences developing in rural and underserved areas, the center also recently hosted its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., which included presentations from federal agencies as well as dental and medical accrediting bodies.

A clinical study led by Edwin Kim, MD, at the UNC School of Medicine, showed how Peanut Sublingual Immunotherapy (Peanut SLIT) is safe and effective in children ranging from 1-to-4 years of age. Remission of peanut allergy was also possible after three months of stopping the treatment.

The annual Dean’s Performance Awards honor employees whose work helps the UNC School of Medicine achieve its vision of becoming the nation’s leading public school of medicine. The 2023 award winners are Scott Young, Mary Hauser, John Harrison, Gloria Lima, Keri Waldrop and Dallas Carter.

A new study published by UNC Family Medicine’s Sarah Kowitt, PhD, MPH, and colleagues looked at the impact of different types of warning signs for large and premium cigars sold individually at the point of sale. The team’s newly developed graphic and text warnings were more effective than the FDA’s proposed text-only warnings and could potentially increase the effectiveness of warning signs for large and premium cigars.

This newly-created position will develop and oversee the University of North Carolina School of Medicine Research Administration Services, which is being created to better serve the research functions of our departments and centers, reduce risk and improve efficiencies through process improvement. This position will advise school leadership on research policy and provide guidance and direction application strategies and on compliance with internal and external regulatory requirements.
