In 2013 and 2014 UNC Hospitals received Equality Leader status from the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI). The Human Rights Campaign Foundation developed the HEI to address “the need for equitable, knowledgeable, sensitive and welcoming healthcare, free from discrimination based on LGBT status.” The Foundation is charged with promoting equitable and inclusive care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender patients and their families. Equality Leader recognition indicates that UNC Hospitals is committed to protecting its LGBT patients and employees from discrimination. The HEI survey gives health care facilities the resources they need to provide LGBT patient-centered care and recognizes those who explicitly commit to LGBT equity and inclusion.

Once again UNC Hospitals has been invited to participate in the HEI survey. As a participant in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Annual Healthcare Equality Index, over 50 different online, on-demand CME accredited LGBT training options are available FREE to all UNC Hospitals employees. The training options are offered by The Center for Affiliated Learning (The CAL), the National LGBT Health Education Center and the Veteran’s Health Administration. You will be able to select from both interactive eLearning courses and recorded webinars. Topics range from the basics of LGBT Patient-Centered Care to more specialized topics for clinicians. Having employees participate in the trainings is a criteria for maintaining our Equality Leader status; however, training opportunities like these also support the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
