Celebrating First-Generation College Graduates at the UNC SOM

November 8, 2022 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

November 8 is the date for the annual National First-Generation College Celebration to honor the anniversary of the signing of the Higher Education Act (HEA) of 1965.
HEA ushered in programs that support access, retention, and completion of higher education for low-income, potential first-generation college graduates.
First-generation students are those who are first in their family to go to college (parents did not receive a bachelor’s degree).
Typically, this is widely acknowledged at an undergraduate level, but UNC SOM has created a program with this key demographic in mind.
Today, the F1rst Gen Fellows Program and UNC SOM are celebrating and recognizing those in the SOM community who identify as first-gen in the Bondurant Atrium and G030 from 12-1 pm.  We welcome everyone to stop by to recognize your amazing classmates and grab some sweet treats!
The program allows for a mix of virtual and in-person events throughout the year on various topics of importance to matriculating medical students such as financial aid, networking/residency advice, App/Indy Phase transitions, leadership and identity, and etiquette and professionalism.
If you are interested in learning more about the F1rst Gen Fellows Program, please contact the program coordinator, Felicia Crawford, at felicia_crawford@med.unc.edu.
