Eating Disorders in Primary Care: A Novel Tool for Screening and Referral

December 9, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

This webinar will be presented by Dr. Christine Peat. Dr. Christine Peat is the Director of the National Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders (NCEED) and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Primary care providers (PCPs) are in a unique position to screen patients for eating disorders, particularly those who may not display obvious signs or symptoms. To date, screening for these conditions has been challenging given the lack of primary care-specific strategies that fit the needs of a busy clinical practice. In this webinar, we will discuss NCEED’s novel primary care tool: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment for Eating Disorders (SBIRT-ED), and the ways in which it can be used to increase detection of eating pathology and referrals to specialty care.

By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • List the advantages of screening for eating disorders in primary care
  • Identify eating disorder-specific strategies for use in primary care
  • Describe the SBIRT-ED tool and its use in clinical practice
