MHI Seminar Series presents Karen Hirschi, Ph.D., Alumni Professor of Cell Biology, Department of Cell Biology, University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, VA

May 22 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Summary of Seminar:  Establishing a functional vascular network is a rate-limiting step in embryonic development, the repair of injured tissues, and the engineering of tissue replacements. The Hirschi lab has been working to elucidate fundamental mechanisms of vessel network formation and repair. We will discuss work showing that this process requires the coordinated regulation of endothelial cell growth suppression and subtype specialization. We will also discuss key regulators of endothelial cell cycle state and identity that may provide new targets for the treatment of diseases associated with endothelial cell hyperproliferation and impaired arterial-venous specialization, including vascular malformations and tumor angiogenesis.
