TraCS Qualitative Research Training series begins February 10

Registration is open for the TraCS Qualitative Research Training series. Four training sessions in October are offered as part of the series: Qualitative Research 101, Semi-Structured Interviewing, Introduction to Focus Groups, and Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis. You may register for individual sessions or for the entire series, but you must register for each session separately.

 

Qualitative Research 101 – Thursday, February 10 | 10:00am- 12:00pm

This online training session will provide an introduction to qualitative research methods. Topics covered will include differences between quantitative and qualitative research, qualitative research methodologies, strategies for qualitative data collection, and methods of qualitative data analysis. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences conducting qualitative research.

The session will be led by MaryBeth Grewe, MPH, NC TraCS Community and Stakeholder Engagement Program Qualitative Research Specialist.

Semi-structured Interviewing – Thursday, February 17 | 10:00am – 12:00pm

This interactive online workshop will focus on semi-structured interviewing, a data collection method used in qualitative research. Topics covered will include basics of semi-structured interviews, development of interview questions and probes, interviewing skills, and considerations for conducting virtual interviews. Participants will have the opportunity to practice developing interview questions and using interviewing skills.

The workshop will be led by MaryBeth Grewe, MPH, Qualitative Research Specialist, and Simone Frank, MPH, Engagement and Outreach Coordinator, of the NC TraCS Community and Stakeholder Engagement Program.

Introduction to Focus Groups – Thursday, February 24 | 10:00am- 12:00pm

This interactive online workshop will provide an introduction to focus groups, a data collection method used in qualitative research. Topics covered will include focus group methodology, considerations for planning a focus group, development of focus group discussion guides, focus group facilitation skills, and tips for conducting virtual focus groups. Attendees will also participate in a mini “mock” virtual focus group session.

The workshop will be led by MaryBeth Grewe, MPH, Qualitative Research Specialist, and Simone Frank, MPH, Engagement and Outreach Coordinator, of the NC TraCS Community and Stakeholder Engagement Program.

Introduction to Qualitative Data Analysis – Thursday, March 3 | 10:00am- 12:00pm

This online training will provide an introduction to basic qualitative data analysis. The session will cover the basics of qualitative data analysis and steps in the analysis process, including transcribing, memoing, codebook development and coding, using computer-based analysis software, exploring content areas or themes, and interpreting and communicating findings. Participants will have the opportunity to practice developing and applying codes.

The training will be led by MaryBeth Grewe, MPH, Qualitative Research Specialist; Simone Frank, MPH, Engagement and Outreach Coordinator; and Laura Villa Torres, PhD, Diversity & Inclusion Specialist.
