Undergraduate Investment to Increase Rural Primary Care Physicians
The Rural Medicine Pathway Program (RMPP) is a collaboration between the UNC School of Medicine and the Carolina Covenant Scholars Program. Undergraduate students from rural NC are engaged in years-long professional development opportunities to learn about rural medicine. In Fall 2025, we launched an APPLES service learning course for RMPP Scholars to examine the roles of public health and community based efforts in promoting patient-centered care. Additionally, this course seeks to create a pathway to improve rural healthcare and address workforce shortfalls, particularly primary care, across the state of North Carolina through strengthening professional competencies via undergraduate student engagement in rural communities.
