The students were joined by several UNC School of Medicine faculty members and administrators for the event. Following a processional, the students were welcomed with remarks by William L. Roper, MD, MPH, Dean, UNC School of Medicine, CEO, UNC Health Care, Wesley Burks, MD, Executive Dean, and Robert Bashford, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions. The event’s keynote address was delivered by Harold Pillsbury, MD, Thomas J. Dark Distinguished Professor of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, Chair, Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Then, the students each came to the stage to be formally presented their white coats. One by one, the students donned the garments which will forever distinguish them as physicians.

As is tradition at UNC, each student’s coat contained an inspirational message from a UNC SOM alumnus in the front pocket. The "Words of Wisdom" effort is organized by the Medical Foundation.

With words of encouragement from past generations of medical students, this year’s class left Memorial Hall ready for the challenges they will face during the next four years of their training.
