When Niklaus and Lucy Steiner created the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation and held their first benefit concert in 2014, their sole purpose was to fund a position at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center to oversee psychosocial support for young people with cancer. This is how they wanted to honor their 15-year-old daughter Sophie who died from a rare form of cancer.
Not only did they succeed in getting such a position created, they’ve helped fund its expansion into what is now one of the leading cancer support programs for adolescents and young adults in the world.
The foundation, which continues to work closely with UNC Lineberger, continues to hold benefit concerts every August. Buy tickets for this year’s event here.
