CHAPEL HILL, NC – The American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) is entering new leadership. As part of this transition, Andrea Hayes-Jordan, MD, surgeon in chief at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, has been elected a governor of the board of directors for the APSA and will serve in this position through 2023.
Hayes-Jordan, a pioneering surgeon and researcher, previously served as chair of the cancer committee of the ASPA, in addition to numerous other leadership roles across professional organizations. Hayes-Jordan was the first African American female pediatric surgeon board certified in the United States and is an internationally recognized leader in pediatric surgery and pediatric oncology. She was the first surgeon to perform cytoreductive surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC) in a pediatric patient. In addition to her clinical accomplishments, Hayes-Jordan is noted as both a basic science and clinical researcher. In her laboratory, she focuses on the study of rare sarcomas. As an educator, she has a particular interest in mentoring young women interested in academic surgery.
Hayes-Jordan, the Byah Thomason Doxey-Sanford Distinguished Professor of Surgery, joined the UNC Department of Surgery in 2018. She is also a member of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The APSA is also welcoming a new president – John H.T. Waldhausen, MD, chief of the division of general and thoracic surgery at the Seattle Children’s Hospital and a professor at the University of Washington School of Medicine. In addition to Waldhausen and Hayes-Jordan, incoming APSA board members include president-elect Edward M. Barksdale, Jr., MD, UH Case Medical Center; treasurer Marjorie J. Arca, MD, University of Rochester Medical Center; and governor Ellen M. Reynolds, MD, St. Luke’s Children’s Hospital. They join current board members secretary Max R. Langham, Jr., MD, University of Tennessee Health Science Center; governor Peter W. Dillon, MD, Penn State Hershey Medical Center; strategic officer David M. Powell, MD, Stanford University Medical Center; and immediate past President Joseph P. Vacanti, MD, Massachusetts General Hospital.
