...A new study out of North Carolina, flagged by Aaron Carroll, suggests that the labels could be more effective if they included additional information—namely, the exercise required to work off the calories at hand. Researchers showed 804 employees of the University of North Carolina Medical Center one of the four menu formats, shown above. They were asked to “imagine you are at a fast food restaurant” ordering a meal. Then they selected all items they would purchase.

Caldwell Memorial Hospital Merges With UNC Health Care

Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care System announced it has completed a merger with Caldwell Memorial Hospital based in Lenoir, N.C., effective May 1.
The merger agreement was announced in November, under which UNC would become the sole owner of the hospital, invest $35 million for capital improvements over five years, contribute $4 million to the CMH Foundation and maintain current management, staffing, services and local governance.

Eggs are the most common food allergy in children and it can occur at infancy. ...The study at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine found that by eating small amounts of egg every day for many months lowered the number of allergic reactions in 75 percent of egg-allergic children; 28 percent were able to incorporate egg into their regular diets after two years on the treatment. The intent of the study was to develop a new treatment for egg allergy since the only option so far has been to avoid eggs altogether.

UNC Transplant Wing $30,000 Closer To New Name

The transplant wing at UNC Hospitals is $30,000 closer to being named after the man who formerly cheered on North Carolina as Rameses. “That’s just more than we had; that’s the way to look at it,” says Charlotte Ray, the mother of Jason. “Each step that we take—no matter what it is, what anybody does for us—that’s just getting us closer and closer to it.”

UNC Health Care takes ownership of Caldwell Memorial

UNC Health Care is taking another hospital under its wing, this time reaching to Lenoir and bringing Caldwell Memorial Hospital into the fold. The ownership structure will be similar to the one UNC Health Care has with Rex Healthcare and Chatham Hospital, whereby UNC Health Care becomes complete owner - what is referred to in hospital circles as “sole member” - of Caldwell Memorial.

Hillsborough a step closer to hospital

Workers signed a Carolina blue beam and then hoisted it on top of the new UNC hospital south of Hillsborough on Thursday as part of a topping out ceremony marking the completion of the building’s frame. A small Leland cypress and an American flag were lifted along with the last beam to the top of the 256,000-square-foot hospital.
