Statewide AHEC Meeting Navigates a “Sea of Change”
From April 4 - 6, 2011, more than 250 AHEC staff from across the state gathered in Wrightsville Beach for the NC AHEC Statewide Meeting. Hosted by SEAHEC, the meeting had the theme of “Sea of Change: Implementing Reform Through Innovation” and featured the Mayer Lecture, three plenary sessions and 14 concurrent sessions.

Exposure to Rural Health Gives Students Better Understanding of Population Needs

The theme for the 12th Annual Future Leaders in Healthcare Conference, “See Yourself in Rural Health” offered students a chance to focus on the NC AHEC mission of addressing the health care needs of underserved communities and populations. The statewide conference is held annually for high school students who have participated in AHEC programs throughout the year. This year’s conference was held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Cykert Receives Grant to Address Lung Cancer Disparities
Samuel Cykert, MD, has received a $1.8 million five-year grant from the American Cancer Society (ACS) to study “Lung Cancer Surgery: Decisions Against Life Saving Care.” Cykert is associate director of medical education for the NC AHEC Program, and clinical director of the NC Regional Extension Center for Health Information Technology.

NC AHEC Hosts 13th Medical Faculty Day
On May 26, 2011, participants from around the state gathered at the William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education in Chapel Hill for the 13th annual AHEC Medical Faculty Day. Presentations included the story of establishing a new kind of medical school in Canada.
