RE:          School of Medicine Bylaw Changes

Dear Colleagues:

The School of Medicine Bylaws have undergone formal review in preparation for our upcoming LCME site visit March 10-14th.  I am writing to you today to provide information about the proposed revisions to those bylaws (see draft bylaws online) and to encourage you to vote when ballots are distributed via email next month. The proposal to revise the School of Medicine Bylaws provides additional opportunity for peer selection of faculty to standing committees of the medical school.

The following changes to the bylaws are being proposed:

1.  Codify term of appointment (initial term of three years; may serve an additional three-year term)

2.  Addition of elected faculty on the following committees:

a)  Dean’s Advisory (2)

b)  Admissions (6)

c)  Education (2)

d)  Student Progress (2)

e)  Fixed-Term APT (increase in number to 12)

3.  Creation of Nominating Committee

Elected faculty to Dean’s Advisory Committee (2), four appointed faculty, one basic science chair and one clinical science chair elected by their peers, Executive Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Vice-Dean for Education, Vice-Dean for Research.

4.  Elimination of the Administrative Board.

The proposed bylaws changes will come to a vote next month, and two-thirds of the votes must be affirmative to enact these changes to our bylaws.  If approved, the changes (e.g., creation of the Nominating Committee) would begin to be operationalized this academic year.

We appreciate your consideration and strongly encourage you to vote on this important matter when the electronic ballot is distributed next month.
