June 13 – Eight Diagnostic Radiology residents and 10 subspecialty residents and fellows completed their training and were honored at the Department’s end-of-year banquet. Chosen by all residents for her excellence in teaching, Associate Professor Dr. Laura Heyneman received the Department’s 2014 Charles A. Bream Teaching Award.

Honors/Awards/Appointments

Hongyu An, PhD, received an NIH-funded R01, entitled, “Rapid, Robust and Non-invasive Cerebral Oxygenation Measurements using MRI” in spring 2014.

Drs. Diane Armao and J. Keith Smith were named Co-Principal Investigators for UNC’s Department of Radiology and School of Public Health Community Research Partnership Project, entitled, “A Pilot Study Aimed at the Dissemination and Implementation of Best Practice Guidelines in Pediatric CT Scan Radiation Dose Reduction.” This project was funded by a North Carolina Translational & Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Dissemination & Implementation Science Award in May 2014. (Co-Investigators: Timothy Carey, MD; MPH, Christopher Shea, PhD; Terry Hartman, MPH / Consultants: Jay Crawford, Pete Petrin)

Dr. Diane Armao, and Drs. Hongyu An and J. Keith Smithwere named Co-investigator and Neuroimaging Consultants, respectively, on an NIH R01 entitled, “Giant Axonal Neuropathy Gene Therapy,” five-year funding awarded in April 2014. (P.I.: Steven J. Gray PhD - UNC Gene Therapy Center)

Sheryl G. Jordan, MD, was appointed to serve on the UNC School of Medicine’s Student Promotions Committee in May 2014 .

Sheryl G. Jordan, MD, was elected to the NC American College of Radiology Executive Board as Alternate Councilor in spring 2014.

Cherie Kuzmiak, DO, served as course director of “Digital Breast Tomosynthesis: A New Future for Mammography,” a one-day program co-hosted by the Wake Forest School of Medicine and Northwest Area Health Education Center (AHEC) in Winston-Salem, NC, in May 2014.

Cherie Kuzmiak, DO, was appointed Chair of the Breast Imaging Refresher Courses for the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in June 2014.

Matthew C. Parrott, PhD, received a three-year CTSA-KL2 Award in May 2014 from UNC’s North Carolina Translational & Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute for his project entitled, "Positron Emission Tomography (PET) to Evaluate Nanoparticle Drug-Delivery."

Richard Semelka, MD, founded the "Body MRI Consortium,” an organization of 11 academic centers across the U.S. with a focus on collaborative body MRI research, in May 2014 and serves as Director.
