Verde Receives PEO Scholar Award

UNC School of Medicine MD/PhD student Audrey Verde has received the 2015 Scholar Award from the Philanthropic Education Organization (PEO), a national group dedicated to the advancement of women in academics. The Scholar Award is a $15,000 scholarship for women pursuing a doctorate-level degree.

“I knew what a competitive award it was, so when I applied I felt like it was a longshot,” Verde said. “When I got word back that I’d won, I was definitely surprised.”

Judy Morris of the Triangle Chapter of PEO was not.

“Audrey is just a really outstanding woman. She is so young and already so well known in her field,” Morris said.

The mission of PEO, Verde said, is in perfect alignment with Advocates for MD-PhD Women in Science, a group she founded along with fellow MD/PhD student Kate Hacker to help fill a gap she saw in the career development for women students at Carolina in the translational sciences.

“I have been so excited to learn more about the work of PEO and look forward to working closely with them throughout the next year,” Verde said. “It is always nice to find a group interested in funding women in academics. This is a nice opportunity and a needed one.”
