OIS Security Byte - Do Not Call

UNC’s Office of Information Systems will be posting bite-size IT Security tips for our users. This week's edition deals with malicious websites or pop-ups that ask users to call a number to have viruses removed from the computer. For more information, contact your local IT Support or chat with us at help.med.unc.edu.

Recently, OIS has seen an increase in users who are being targeted by malicious websites or pop-ups that

          1. Inform them that their computer is infected

          2. Give them a phone number to call for assistance

This is a scam: please do not call. These numbers are illegitimate businesses preying on the unaware. OIS has seen users give remote control access to these scammers, allowing them to install software, and even give their credit card information in hopes of ‘fixing’ the problem.

If you encounter these scams, close the dialogue box or program that contains them. Do not click in the box, and do not call the number!
