The UNC Nutrition Obesity Research Center (NORC) is currently accepting pre-proposals for 1-2 year grants of approximately $20,000/year for Pilot & Feasibility research projects in nutrition or obesity.

Pilot & Feasibility (P&F) projects may be biomedical, epidemiological, or clinical. They may include laboratory or non-laboratory research projects that focus either on human nutrition, on animal work that could be translated to human nutrition, or on basic research related to nutrition or obesity. Human nutrition projects may focus on inpatient or outpatient studies or on epidemiological or community-based research that is social or behavioral in nature.

Our Center’s research is organized around five central themes:

  • Causes and Prevention of Obesity
  • Clinical Nutrition and Chronic Diseases in Populations
  • Metabolic Responses, Metabolic Variation and Requirements for Nutrients
  • Nutritional Interventions and Nutrition Behaviors
  • Pregnancy, Child Growth, and Development

In addition to funding projects under our core focus areas (Diet and Physical Activity; Metabolic Molecular Phenotyping Core; Communication for Health Applications and Interventions (CHAI); Animal Metabolism Phenotyping; and Nutrigenetics), we are also interested in funding projects that focus on Bioinformatics and Metabolomics, and make use of the Nutrition Research Institute’s (NRI) Human Research Core or Mobile Body Composition Trailer.

Criteria for Eligibility: Applicants must be

  • Faculty members at UNC-CH (research and postdoctoral fellows are not eligible)
  • New investigators without current or past NIH research support (R01, P01 or R24) as a PD/PI

OR

  • Established, funded investigators with no previous work in nutritional sciences, and/or obesity who wishes to test the applicability of their expertise to a nutritional science and/or obesity-related problem
