Craig H. Neilsen Foundation: Spinal Cord Injury Research on the Translational Spectrum (SCIRTS) Program

The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation is accepting letters of interest for three funding portfolios under the SCIRTS program, which funds research to improve understanding an advance the treatment of acute and chronic SCI and to fill gaps in the field, including mechanistic, preclinical, translational and/or clinical studies. Award amount varies. Submission deadline is May 27.

The Foundation is accepting Letters of Interest (LOIs) to three funding portfolios under the Spinal Cord Injury Research on the Translational Spectrum (SCIRTS) program, which funds research to improve understanding and advance the treatment of acute and chronic SCI and to fill gaps in the field, including mechanistic, preclinical, translational, and/or clinical studies. Funding is not intended to provide continuous support to individual labs, but to fund novel research throughout the translational spectrum. Areas of research interest include mechanistic research; preclinical, translational research; and clinical research. Eligible applicants do not need to be US citizens and must have institutional approval to apply. The applicant must also have relevant SCI expertise

  • Neilsen Scirts Postdoctoral Fellowship Grants
    Awards up to $150,000 over two years
    For individuals with PhD, MD, DVM or comparable research degree that was attained prior to the LOI submission deadline but within five years of the FGA due date. Grants are intended to provide mentored training for scientists engaged in SCI research. Indirect costs are not allowed for this award, nor is funding for other personnel or equipment.
  • Neilsen SCIRTS Pilot Research Grant
    Awards up to $300,000 over two years
    Program is for independent junior investigators beyond the postdoctoral level or for research projects considered “high risk/high gain,” conducted by junior or senior/established investigators. Up to 15 percent of the total costs may be used for PI salary support. Up to 10 percent of indirect costs are allowed.
  • Neilsen SCIRTS Senior Research Grant
    Awards up to $600,000 over three years
    Program is for established investigators (i.e., associate professor or above) to open new areas of SCI research of fill important gaps in the SCI field. Up to 15 percent of the total costs may be used for PI salary support. Up to 10 percent indirect costs are allowed.

LOI Deadline: May 27 by 5:00 p.m. Invited full proposals due October 21, 2016 with funding decisions anticipated in March 2017 and award funding beginning in July 2017. Application Guidelines for the award.
