Jared Gallaher, MD, a fourth-year surgery resident was recently awarded Best Abstract in the category of Global Surgery by the American College of Surgery.

Gallaher is a fourth-year general surgery resident at UNC. Raised in Kentucky, he attended Wheaton College and Wake Forest School of Medicine. He recently completed a 2-year research fellowship with the Malawi Surgical Initiative, spending 1 year living in Lilongwe, Malawi under the supervision of Anthony Charles, MD, MPH.

Gallaher’s research focuses on trauma, burn, and emergency general surgery care in developing countries, especially in sub- Saharan Africa. His winning abstract is titled “Multi-Drug Resistance Colonization is Associated with Increased Mortality after Burn Injury in Sub-Saharan Africa.” Co-authors include Joanna Grudziak, MD, Vanessa Msosa, MBBS, Bruce Cairns, MD, FACS, and Anthony Charles, MD, MPH, FACS

Gallaher plans to pursue academic global surgery after completing a fellowship in acute care surgery.
