Match Day: One More Look

It has been nearly one month since the UNC School of Medicine held its annual Match Day celebration. As graduating medical students are excitedly planning to begin their residency training, and programs at UNC Hospitals are awaiting the arrival of their newest resident physicians, we are taking a closer look at the Match results from this outstanding class.


  • Overall, 97 percent of students matched into a residency program, exceeding the national average.
  • Students matched into a total of 23 different specialties
  • Students will complete their residency training in 30 states, plus the District of Columbia and Canada
  • 60 members of the class (1/3) will remain in North Carolina
  • 34 students will complete their residencies at UNC Hospitals


The five most popular specialties were:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Family Medicine
  • Ob-Gyn
  • Pediatrics
  • Anesthesiology
  • Emergency Medicine

A total of 27 students placed into surgery residency programs:

  • 6 in general surgery
  • 6 in surgery-preliminary
  • 8 into orthopaedic surgery

Extending Medical School:

A total of 51 students elected to complement their MD training with advanced educational and research opportunities:

  • 19 students completed an MD/MPH
  • 5 students completed an MD/PhD
  • 6 students completed an MD/MBA
  • 15 students completed a research year
  • 6 students pursued other complementary training
