Shen honored by Association of Women Surgeons

Mary Shen, a fourth-year medical student, has received the Patricia Numann Outstanding Medical Student Award from the Association of Women Surgeons.

The Association of Women Surgeons, founded in 1981, is committed to supporting the careers of female surgeons from medical school through retirement. With the Patricia Numann Outstanding Medical Student Award, the group is recognizing Shen for her “outstanding contributions and leadership as a student.”

Throughout her time at the UNC School of Medicine, Shen has actively worked to build connections among female students interested in surgery. She has served as president of the UNC student chapter of the Association of Women Surgeons and helped to create a bi-directional mentoring program where medical students offer guidance to younger students and receive mentorship from residents and faculty members.

In 2016, she was recognized for this work with one of the UNC General Alumni Association’s University Award for the Advancement of Women. Read more about that award here.

Earlier this year, Shen sat down with Susan Girdler, PhD, to discuss the importance of mentoring. You can read more about that conversation here.

Shen will be officially recognized on Oct. 23 at the 23rd at the 36th Anniversary AWS Foundation Awards Dinner during the American College of Surgeons Annual Clinical Congress in San Diego, CA.
