Vascular Interventional Radiology announces expanded services and locations

UNC's Vascular Interventional Radiology Program is offering expanded services at UNC Medical Center and UNC Hillsborough Campus.

Charles Burke, MD, Chief of the Division and Vice Chair of Interventional Services, announces new VIR Services at UNC Hospitals Hillsborough. These services are currently available on a limited basis, with future plans for expansion.

The new services at Hillsborough include VIR lithotripsy, collaboration between the VIR Program and Urology Services.  Lithotripsy procedures occur every other Wednesday and VIR procedures, the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. The goal over the next year is to increase services full-time to provide an improved patient experience at Hillsborough. The types of procedures offered at the Hillsborough location can be obtained by calling the VIR scheduling desk at 984-974-0441.

Also of note for VIR services at UNC Medical Center, on June 22nd, Embosphere Microspheres made by Merit Medical received an indication for prostatic artery embolization by the FDA. This is the first embolic to receive such an indication. A past clinical trial conducted at UNC contributed data that led to the approval.

The department is very excited about these new developments.
