The American Medical Student Association is the oldest and largest independent association of physicians-in-training in the United States. Founded in 1950, AMSA is a student-governed, non-profit organization committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training.

Beginning May 1, Tsai will serve as the organization’s President-Elect, followed by a year-long term as President.

“I am very excited to be taking on this role of leadership over a national organization of physicians-in-training, and I hope that my position will highlight and elevate UNC as an environment for training physician leaders,” Tsai said.

Tsai had previously held positions as AMSA’s Vice President for Leadership Development, Vice President for Program Development, Gender and Sexuality Chair and Coordinator and Sexual Health Scholars Program Co-Director.

Tsai has completed his PhD work at UNC, working in the lab of J. Victor Garcia, PhD. In the lab, Tsai was involved with work to engineer humanized mouse models that carry human immune cells, allowing for in vivo HIV experiments. Tsai’s thesis research centered on the exploration of a few HIV cure strategies.

He is now back to his clinical training rotations and will begin his fourth year of medical school this summer. Following graduation in 2018, he will serve fulltime in the role of AMSA president.
