Gary Beck Dallaghan, PhD, has joined the UNC School of Medicine’s Office of Medical Education as the Director of Educational Scholarship. Beck Dallaghan comes to Chapel Hill from the University of Nebraska Medical Center where he served as Assistant Dean for Medical Education.

At UNC, Beck Dallaghan’s primary charge will be working with faculty to facilitate publication of research in the realm of medical education.

“I was well aware of all of the great things going on here and I’m excited to devote myself full time to helping to further raise the profile of UNC as an innovator in medical education,” Beck Dallaghan said.

Beck Dallaghan will serve as a resource for faculty conducting medical education research. He is available to consult with faculty on ongoing projects as well as help find appropriate journals for publication.

“I am a firm believer that for whatever work you do there is a journal waiting to publish it,” Beck Dallaghan said. “I also know that our faculty are incredibly busy and seeking out these different journals takes time. I will have the time, though, to make sure we find the best place to get these papers published.”

While at Nebraska, Beck Dallaghan facilitated a faculty writing group with drop in sessions where researchers could come as their schedules allow to discuss works in progress – an “informal peer review.” He hopes to eventually create something similar at UNC.

For now, he is getting acclimated to Chapel Hill and the community at the UNC School of Medicine, even attending some of the new student orientation sessions earlier in August.

“I have been extraordinarily impressed. The orientation sessions were so welcoming and uplifting for everyone, myself included.”
