Zollicoffer Lecture & Banquet

The 37th Annual Zollicoffer Conference consist of several events between Feb. 22-24 to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Lawrence Zollicoffer, the fourth African American graduate of the UNC School of Medicine and founder of the Garwyn Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Throughout his life, Dr. Zollicoffer exemplified qualities that students admire and hope to emulate as future physicians. The annual Zollicoffer-Merrimon Lecture will be delivered by William Lynn Weaver, MD, chief of surgery at the Fayetteville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The 37th  Zollicoffer-Merrimon Lectureship

The Zollicoffer Lectureship was established in 1981 by members of the UNC chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) with the support of Dean Bondurant of the UNC School of Medicine. Named in honor of Lawrence Zollicoffer, MD the lecture is intended to increase the awareness of minority health issues and introduce the student body to dynamic minority role models in the field of medicine. In 2004, the Merrimon Family joined in providing support to this program.

SNMA Silent Auction and Reception

Each year the UNC SOM chapter of the Student National Medical Association hosts a Silent Auction during the Zollicoffer events to benefit a community non-profit such as a local mentoring program for elementary students.

Zollicoffer-Merrimon Banquet

The 37th Annual Zollicoffer-Merrimon Banquet is our annual event that honors our lecturer as well as recognizes the contributions of our SNMA, LMSA and QSA students to the community this past year, award the Zollicoffer-Cross Community Health Fellowship and honors some special guests in attendance.

Zollicoffer Committee presents the documentary "Raising Bertie"

Debuting in 2017, Raising Bertie follows several young men of color in rural, eastern NC as they navigate coming of age in an area with significant barriers to education, healthcare, and economic advancement. Join us for a screening of the film and conversation following surrounding the anvil of poverty and mechanisms for change.

Zollicoffer committee presents "Moving from Dialogue to Action:" A Community Problem Solving Project

The Zollicoffer committee is committed to developing programs that not only enrich underdeveloped communities but also effectively addresses everyday issues and struggles that serve as deterrents to meaningful growth and individual success.  Accordingly, the 2018 Zollicoffer community service project will be a think tank that brings together a multidisciplinary group of community leaders, health professionals, education pioneers, students and administrative staff that think of actionable ways to address the issues in rural and urban communities like Bertie and Durham Counties, NC.
