Radiology Noon Conference: Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST)

The Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST) is a mammography trial that is very important to the future of breast cancer screening. It aims to give breast imaging researchers knowledge of how to move beyond the "one size fits all" approach. Most women are currently screened in the same manner, based on age-specific guidelines. The TMIST trial will help researchers develop a more personalized approach that tailors mammography for each woman based on her own genetics and individual risk factors for developing breast cancer.

Former UNC Kenan Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering Dr. Etta Pisano

Dr. Etta Pisano, Principal Investigator of TMIST, has centered her career research focus around the development, application and testing of imaging technology for the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer and other breast problems. In the early 2000s, Pisano served as the Principal Investigator of the Digital Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST), a study comparing digital to film mammography and the largest clinical trial ever run by a radiologist. Results were published in 2005 by the New England Journal of Medicine.

From 1989 to 2005, she served as UNC’s Division Chief of Breast Imaging. Over her 20+ years at UNC, Pisano established and/or directed several dynamic research entities at UNC, including: 1) Founding Director of UNC’s Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC); and 2) Director of the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Studies (NC TraCS) Institute, serving as UNC’s CTSA Principal Investigator in that role. As Kenan Professor of Radiology and Biomedical Engineering, Pisano also served as UNC School of Medicine’s Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.

In 2010, Pisano was named Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)’s first female Dean of its College of Medicine. She has since joined Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) as a Department of Radiology staff radiologist in its Division of Breast Imaging.
