The Patrick and Catherine Weldon Donaghue Medical Research Foundation ("The Donaghue Foundation") is accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) to provide funding for researchers to use existing data sources to answer a research question that has the near-term potential to improve health. In 2018, the Foundation will continue to focus on improving quality care and quality of life for the elderly population in care facilities. This program invites researchers to address a problem affecting the elderly in care facilities with data that already exists. New data collection will not be allowed in this program. This year, the Foundation welcomes all topics related to improving the health of elders in care facilities, but is particularly interested in receiving letters of intent on the following topics:

  • The treatment of substance abuse and dependency or other mental health conditions other than delirium and dementia
  • Healthcare decisions by conservators or guardians and their effects on residents of care facilities
  • Interventions that improve oral health
  • Interventions that reduce disparities in health status

Researchers applying for this grant must identify a stakeholder in the care delivery or policy arena with whom they will either consult or collaborate and who is willing to work with the researcher to develop a research product that may be readily used to improve care or quality of life. In 2018, the Foundation will invest approximately $750,000 in this grant program and aims to award up to six two-year projects. Eligible applicants must be PhD (or equivalent) investigators at a tax-exempt research institution in the US. To receive the award, the applicant must demonstrate how their research question is important to the stakeholder and propose a rigorous research design. Stakeholder organizations cannot be the applicant organization. Grantees may use this award to augment funding for a project already funded through another grant. Indirect costs may be requested by the applicant institution, not to exceed 10% of direct costs exclusive of equipment purchases.

LOI Deadline: February 5, 2018. Invited full applications due April 16, 2018 with grant term beginning August 2018. Guidelines: http://donaghue.org/grant-opportunities/another-look/
