The School of Medicine of the University of North Carolina seeks a well-qualified leader to serve as Chair for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The Department is one of the top academic pathology and laboratory medicine departments in the country. In partnership with UNC Hospitals McLendon Clinical Laboratories (performing >8 million tests per year), the Department provides state of the art pathology and laboratory medicine clinical services. The Department is a leader in applying clinical laboratory genomic and proteomic technologies for personalized care, using precision companion testing in oncology, hematopathology, immunology and histocompatibility. Faculty teach a broad spectrum of learners, including medical students, residents, sub-specialty residents and clinical scientists in 11 training programs, postdoctoral research fellows, and students in the PhD Graduate Program in Pathobiology and Translational Science. The Department has a strong and diverse research program ranging from fundamental basic research to translational research to applied clinical research. In FY17, the department managed a substantial research portfolio funded mostly by the NIH. UNC provides excellent research infrastructure, including the North Carolina Translational and Clinical Sciences (NC TraCS) Institute funded through an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), and many research centers, including the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.
The Department of Pathology’s integrated relationship with the McLendon Clinical Laboratories supports the Health Care System’s mission to improve the health of all North Carolinians and to become the nation’s leading public academic health care system. The clinical lab directors are all PhDs, except Transfusion Medicine Services and Anatomic Pathology, who completed advanced fellowships in their field of expertise. The directors are nationally renowned in their fields, which promotes an environment conducive to research and development of state of the art technologies. Their involvement at the national level of their respective professional societies enables them to implement cutting edge technologies and testing at the Medical Center. This expertise creates consultative and collaborative relationships with providers that pathologists in other areas may not be as equipped to provide. Partnerships between the labs and other clinical specialties, such as hematology/oncology, benign hematology, cardiology, nephrology and endocrinology, enables providers to develop and provide personalized patient care.
Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is critical to excellence and quality in patient care and translational research. Access to reliable, state of the art and cutting edge medical laboratory and genetic testing is crucial to our position as a quaternary care institution. It is the bedrock of both our clinical and research endeavors. From a strictly surgical oncology point of view, timely and knowledgeable pathologic and cytologic evaluation of clinical specimens is critical to quality patient care and the pathologist should be an integral part of the cancer care team—not a peripheral technician. Other clinical areas essential to quality care include the blood bank and the evaluation of infectious materials. We should seek someone who thinks of their efforts as integral to clinical medicine and who fully engages in the clinical enterprise rather than someone who rarely emerges from the lab or office. A willingness to get involved with translational clinical research and an interest in participating in meetings and research symposia on a national and international level is also a plus.
The UNC School of Medicine and the McLendon Clinical Laboratories, as part of the UNC Medical Center, maintain a strong financial position that supports clinical programs and research and development efforts.
The selected individual will lead a diverse group of over one hundred faculty members and will oversee all aspects of the Department, including clinical practice, education, research, and fiscal management consistent with the strategic planning of the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Hospitals/UNC Health Care.
Minimum qualifications include an M.D./D.O. degree with board certification in Anatomic Pathology or Clinical Pathology, a distinguished record of research accomplishment, a strong commitment to clinical excellence, education and diversity, and clear demonstration of the qualities needed to lead and manage a multifaceted academic department into the future.
