New VIR Consult Service Model Begins July 2nd, 2018

On July 2nd, 2018, Vascular Interventional Radiology will change to a full consult service model for INPATIENTS at UNCMC

Vascular Interventional Radiology will be moving to a full Consult Service model for INPATIENTS at UNCMC.

Following a VIR pilot test that found improved throughput and order accuracy in June 2018, a decision was made to implement the consult service model for VIR across the main campus.

Beginning Monday, July 2nd, 2018 Service Providers across the Medical Center will now place a consult order instead of entering a procedural order. VIR Consult Service will assess the patient, collborate with the referring clinical team and place the procedure order.

What Does This Mean?

On July 2nd, 2018, Service Providers will enter an order for a VIR consult  instead of placing their own procedural order. The consult will populate into a VIR Consult List and the VIR Providers will assess the patient and place the procedure order. Again, DO NOT place an order for a procedure, as that will only delay patient care.

For EMERGENT and URGENT consults, please place a stat consult order and call the VIR INPATIENT Consult pager: 216-8477. This same VIR Inpatient Consult Pager number will be used at all times – days, nights, and weekends.  Be sure to include ordering provider contact information in the consult request.

For ROUTINE, non-urgent consults, a consult order should be placed and the VIR team will contact the clinical service to discuss the case.  Simple, straight-forward consults DO NOT require a page to the  the VIR INPATIENT Consult pager, as the VIR Inpatient team will contact the clinical service to discuss the case.  Routine, “heads-up” pages after business hours for non-urgent cases are discouraged.

All consult requests must include accurate provider contact information in order to faciliate communication and efficiency.

ROUTINE, non-urgent consults placed after 4 pm will be addressed the following morning by the VIR inpatient team. If clinical details need to be discussed, clinical services should page the VIR Inpatient Consult Pager after 8 am the following morning.  Accurate daytime clinical service contact information must be included in order facilitate communication.

Hillsborough Campus will convert to a VIR Consult Service in October.

Neuro-Interventional procedural orders will remain unchanged.
