Matthews named Associate Dean for Administration
Karlina Matthews, MBA, has been named Associate Dean for Administration at the UNC School of Medicine, pending requisite approvals from the University. Matthews has been with the UNC School of Medicine since 2002, holding several roles of increasing responsibility within the Department of Psychiatry. Since 2015, she has served as the Department’s Associate Chair for Administration.
Shenvi honored with award from American College of Emergency Physicians
Christina Shenvi, MD, PhD, FACEP, assistant professor of emergency medicine, has been honored with a National Emergency Medicine Junior Faculty Teaching Award by the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Oberlander Named Editor of Health Politics Journal
Jonathan Oberlander, professor and chair of Social Medicine and professor of Health Policy & Management, has been named the new editor of the Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law (JHPPL).

Dr. Herfarth describes the differences of biosimilars and biologic drugs, as well as safety issues when switching from an original drug to a biosimilar. Dr. Herfarth is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and co-directs the UNC Multidisciplinary Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease Research and Treatment.

FDA Approves Cochlear Implantation for Single-Sided Deafness and Asymmetric Hearing Loss
MED-EL USA announced the FDA approval for the use of their cochlear implants for single-sided deafness and asymmetric hearing loss for patients 5 years of age and older on July, 22, 2019. The data from the clinical trial on cochlear implantation in cases of single-sided deafness and asymmetric hearing loss conducted by Margaret Dillon, AuD, and the UNC Cochlear Implant Clinical Research lab was instrumental in the FDA approval.
