Melina Kibbe, MD, Colin G. Thomas Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, was honored with the 12th Annual Women Leaders in Medicine Award from the American Medical Student Association. Kibbe was nominated by Perry Tsai, MD, PhD, National President of the American Medical Student Association and recent MD and PhD graduate from the UNC School of Medicine.


The leaders of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) selected Dr. Kibbe as one of the recipients of the 12 Annual Women Leaders in Medicine Awards. The award recognizes women physicians and educators inspiring the next generation of women in medicine. The Women Leaders in Medicine (WLIM) awards were created by AMSA in 2008 to recognize women physicians and educators who are changing the face of medicine through their lives, their professions, or their teaching. These women deserve recognition for their accomplishments and dedication to fostering tomorrow’s women leaders in medicine.

Dr. Kibbe was nominated by Perry Tsai, MD, PhD, National President of the American Medical Student Association and recent MD and PhD graduate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The award was presented at the 2019 AMSA Convention and Exposition on March 9, just outside Washington, D.C.

Founded in 1950, the AMSA is a student-governed, national organization committed to representing the concerns of physicians-in-training.
